How to Get and Stay Motivated

Often, we are the only ones holding ourselves back from achieving all that we would like to. Whether it comes to losing weight, gaining new skills, or starting a business on our own, we often start out full of enthusiasm, only for the project to fall by the wayside when our motivation falters and we give up.

Finding and maintaining motivation is a huge problem for many, if not most, of us. And when we find that we have lost it, we often give up and decide that the challenge we originally set ourselves was too demanding, or that we just haven’t got what it takes.

When confronting a challenge, it is a mistake to focus excessively on the end result. Let’s say that you want to run a marathon, but you are currently unfit. Obviously, you are not going to be able to get off the couch and do the marathon tomorrow; you will need to start small, and gradually build your way up to it. Perhaps you’ll even need to start with something as undemanding as a one-mile walk, and only progress to running one, five, or ten miles as you get gradually fitter or stronger.

The same applies to any other sort of challenge. Rather than focusing on the gap between where you are now and where you want to be, which can feel overwhelming, it makes sense to map out a route with milestones along the way—how much weight you can reasonably lose in a month, or how many classes in a new language you can attend in a short period of time. That way, at any given time, the challenge you are currently facing is the next milestone, and not the final destination. Thus, the journey from where you are now to where you want to be becomes manageable.

Another important factor in maintaining motivation is positive thinking and good levels of self-esteem. Nobody can remain motivated if their inner voice is constantly telling them that they are no good and are never going to make it. It may be worth working with a therapist over several sessions to identify ways in which you may be compromising your own ability to think positively and build your self-esteem.

If there are people in your life whose negativity is impacting on your motivation, you will need to look closely at your relationship with them. Depending on the severity of the situation, you might want to limit the amount of time you spend with them or find a way to work with them to bring more positivity into your relationship.

Learning how to be more positive and more motivated about the changes you want to make in your life will have wonderful repercussions across many different areas. It can be challenging to change the habits of a lifetime—but it is definitely worth it!
